Professor Dr. Michael Krainer is a specialist in the effective treatment of cancer using medication. In this regard, particular emphasis is placed on minimising possible side-effects.

As Programme Director for “Urological and Gynaecological Tumours” at the University Clinic for Internal Medicine, AKH Vienna, Professor Krainer treats patients with gynaecological and urological tumours. He offers patients affected by these illnesses intensive and long-term collaboration with top gynaecologists and urologists.

In the quest for optimal therapy, Professor Krainer discusses the results at hand with the patient. After providing extensive information about the available treatment spectrum, the next steps are planned. Where necessary, the practice arranges additional examinations or supplementary tests.

New diagnostic methods based on precision medicine are able to characterise a tumour even more accurately. Together with international recommendations and state-of-the-art research, this forms the basis for an individual treatment plan.

Consultation on interdisciplinary cancer treatment

Hospitals and practices have long been completely separate worlds. However, this division is steadily disappearing when it comes to the treatment of cancer. The aim of interdisciplinary cancer treatment is to link individual fields and their methodologies. This results in a significant improvement in the treatment of the patient – from early diagnosis through diagnosis and treatment to post-care and palliative care.

Professor Krainer works closely with some of the best colleagues in all disciplines, ensuring that the patient has access to optimal treatment. In addition to surgical resection of the tumour, this means that neo-adjuvant therapies (radiation and/or drug therapy before the operation) and adjuvant therapies (medication and immunotherapy post-op) are implemented according to best practices.

Tumours are extremely complex. Optimal patient care is only possible as a result of close collaboration between experts in drug-based tumour therapy, radiation therapy and surgery or other surgical disciplines. The treatment team also includes psycho-oncologists, social workers, palliative specialists and specialist oncology nurses.
